Survey on usage of electronic journals in Japan Atomic Energy Agency

Fukazawa, Takeyasu; Nakajima, Hidemitsu; Ishikawa, Masashi

Joho No Kagaku to Gijutsu, 58(6), p.301 - 305, 2008/06

Japan Atomic Energy Agency performed the survey on usage of electronic journals using "Science Direct" provided by Elsevier Science, 2006. Although JAEA researchers are interested in 1,028 titles among physics, chemistry, engineer, medicine, social sciences etc., it is found the 80% of total downloads was occupied by only 102 journal titles. To satisfy researcher's needs for electronic journals effectively, identification the core journals by librarians based on user's needs is rational way in cost. By shifting from print to electronic journals, the number of users increased by 30% and the number of papers read by researchers increased by 7 times. It is also found that many of researchers do not use SD useful functions such as searching, linking to other bibliographic records, and alerting new information of electronic journals.

Indexing policy for International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

Yonezawa, Minoru

Joho No Kagaku to Gijutsu, 58(4), p.178 - 183, 2008/04

International Nuclear Information System (INIS) was founded in 1970 in order to foster scientific and technical information in the field of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purpose in cooperation with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) member countries and related international organizations. INIS member countries collect nuclear related literatures and prepare input records and submit them to the IAEA/INIS Secretariat, and then INIS Secretariat merges those records from member countries into INIS database. In INIS, indexing has been conducted for effective information retrieval. It is important to keep consistency of indexing among INIS members and indexing is conducted mainly for title and abstract in each document based on the indexing manual. This paper describes general principle of indexing as well as specific rules applied for several fields.

Ikeda, Kiyoshi

Joho No Kagaku to Gijutsu, 55(5), p.219 - 223, 2005/05

Conference proceedings are information resources used for researchers to access latest research trends. Although they are important materials that should be collected by the library, it is generally very difficult to acquire them because they are not commercially available. JAERI (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute) Library collects about 19,000 proceedings and makes them available for the researchers. This paper introduces JAERI Library's experience in acquiring conference proceedings in a variety of ways including collecting conference information from academic societies or researchers, utilizing INIS (International Nuclear Information System) database as well as provision of conference proceedings. JAERI-Conf series, which are the proceedings of conferences hosted by JAERI and published as JAERI's research reports, are also introduced.
